"The Danger of a Single Story": a reflection

       Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk, “The Danger of a Single Story”, talks about the threat single narratives can pose to ethnic groups and that lead to stereotypes and consequently prejudice. Adichie starts her speech by sharing her childhood experience of reading western literature that oversimplified and stereotyped the African continent. The Nigerian author considers it important to recognize the existence of multiple and endless stories that reside within a community because this awareness can cultivate respect, empathy and understanding.      During her speech, Adichie mentions that storytelling is powerful enough to shape a person’s view of the world and its multiple cultures and she motivates people to become more critically aware of the narratives they read or the stories they hear about, encouraging them to search for other perspectives that might give another version of the same story.
